Why do they keep publishing the telephone books?

I am sure it has been commented on thousands of times before, but when are they going to stop publishing the telephone books. These are such a waste of space and paper. At the very least they should only publish them for people who want them, not the 65 bijillion copies that are published which enables every household to have three copies.
