I quite often see bananas in the supermarket that have what looks like and feels like red wax on one end of the banana. I've been told that this is for identification, pricing, flavour, preservation, warmth and appearance.
Does anyone actually know why they dip the tip of some bananas in red wax?

I'm pretty sure it just means they can charge more money for them... or maybe it's so when you peel them you can not touch actual peel with your fingers.
(Organic bananas perhaps)?
They are the 'Better Banana' according to these people: http://www.eco-banana.com.au/
Maybe they just got their "fingers" burnt! :))
(Sorry, Andrew. I couldn't resist.)
So that you don't open them from the wrong end.
I didn't even realise there was a wrong end to open a banana but now that i think about it i suppose there is, because i always open it from the stick end (if that makes sense). Thanks Jess, I declare you the winner for why some bananas are tipped with red wax.
The wax-tip identifies a brand, it does not signify what end to open the banana at! These bananas have been grown under a certified ecoganic farming system..google eco bananas!
so the spiders don't get em'
Jess, actual the red end is the right end to peel the banana. If you don't believe watch the experts who do this all day everyday, and see how they it...I am referring to monkeys...
