So a proposed change in the professional standards of the Anglican Church to include cheating clergy on a shame file has caused a bit of a stir. The two letters published on the issue (Letters, October 24) described the church as “unworldly”, “out of touch”, “without the faintest idea on sexual matters”, and even suggested that “many Anglican clergy, including bishops, have [already] had affairs”. Low standards cause cover-ups and scandals, while high standards cause panic and criticism. Is this a case of the church being damned if it does and damned if it doesn’t?
