Today's letter is sent in response to this letter by A. Sutcliffe of Empire Bay

"If John Howard goes, the letters page will be filled with attacks on Kevin Rudd. It seems that only people with a grievance make the effort to communicate, while those who are reasonably content remain happily silent. However, it would be good to read letters with no split infinitives, and which say "different from" and "compared with", all grammatical niceties that have been missing from recent contributors."

A. Sutcliffe (Letters, September 17), if a person was to accidentally split an infinitive, is this any “different than” a person who was to carelessly split one, and can either of these people be “compared to” a person who was prepared to purposely and persistently split them?
