John Shelby Spong has every right to state that “Another Reformation is overdue" (July 21-22), and he does in fact raise some very important issues that the church must take responsibility for, such as child sexual abuse, violence against women, and perhaps even to some extent the rise of atheism. However his solution to abolish everything that Christians hold dear simply panders to the populace. While the church should not ignore the society within which it exists, the church becomes truly irrelevant when it slavishly follows or even becomes the society it is seeking to save.
